Bright Red Hair - How to Dye It and How to Maintain It

Hi girls!

In memory of my much loved red hair, I’m going to share my tips for keeping your hair bright red. I’m throwing in a few DON’T also, a few mistakes that I made that led me to inevitably dye my hair back to black in the end L

A few things you will need to dye your own gruaig:

Brush and bowl

Gloves

Vaseline

So for starters, I dyed my hair myself, I didn’t go to a hair salon. When I had my hair dyed red a good few years ago in a salon in Waterford, I paid a lot of money every 3 weeks or so to get it topped up. The colour didn’t last half as long as when I dyed it myself this time so in my own opinion, you develop the colour you want over time and it's cheaper to do it yourself! J

Do take note though cailíns, having red hair is a VERY messy business! When dying your hair every 4-5 weeks, washing it etc, it just seems to get everywhere so the new Eva Marie quote ‘All Red Everything’ is really true :P This was one of the factor’s that made me go back to my roots as I didn’t want my new house to have a red stained shower, red towels, red sink, red marks on the door from me being clumsy dying my hair… it’s messy! :P

The above picture courtesy of jessisrad on Imgur might give you an idea! Not pretty and so hard to wash out L

Starting off I had jet black hair so I did use a natural stripper from Boots to remove any previous colour without damaging my hair. My hair was lightened but still a dark brown as I’m naturally very dark brown/black so the first few times I dyed my hair red, it didn’t take but I kept at it and eventually got the colour I wanted!

Here’s a few pics to show you how I gradually got my colour starting with my natural colour:

I bought a mixing bowl and brush in Style Parlour Waterford and a supply of gloves in Dealz. I would definitely advise anyone dying their own hair to buy a pot of Vaseline to put on your ears, outside your hairline, your neck and basically any places you might make a few boo boo’s so that the dye won’t stain your skin.

So I used L’oreal Majicontrast Magenta Red (below) mixed with L’oreal Developer 30 vol. If you’re using a half tube its 37.5ml and full tube its 75ml. The Magenta Red colour is a slightly darker shade than the ‘Ariel’ colour, so if you want that bright, bright red shade use the Majicontrast Red instead.

In between dyes I was using Revlon Colour Ball 600 (below). I’d wash my hair as normal but with cool/lukewarm water (shampoo and rinse etc), towel dry, put in the colour ball all over (roots to tips), put on a shower cap and leave it on for 15/20 minutes or longer. I’d then wash it out and put in a good quality hair mask and leave that on for 30 minutes, then rinse, dry and style J Once a week, I’d try and put Coconut/Argan oil in my hair a few hours before washing or overnight to keep my hair soft and give it a lovely, glossy shine.

To be honest, the trick to keeping my hair bright when I had it red was not washing it on a daily basis because red can fade pretty quickly. I’m lucky my hair is not greasy naturally and I could get away with 4/5+ days between washes using dry shampoo.

But a big mistake I made dying my hair was, every 4/5 weeks I dyed my FULL head red again, this led to my hair ending up in very bad condition, especially since I style my hair a lot i.e. use a lot of heat appliances on it. It got very dry, my split ends were horrendous and it resulted in me slowly losing the length L So if any of you girls (or guys! :P) are going to brave the red colour and dye it yourself, once you have the colour you like and are happy with it, I would recommend only dyeing the roots and use crazy colour/Revlon colour ball/B Red Refresher’s colour on the rest. If the semi-permanent coloured hair starts to lose its zest, I read online afterwards (always the way with me! :P) that you should use a developer with a lesser amount of peroxide to avoid continuous damage.

So there you have it ladies, those are my do’s and don’ts of home dying bright red hair! I’ll definitely go back red at some stage, I love it too much J It’s all about trial and error I suppose! Good luck to any of you who try it :D And if any of ye fire haired ladies have any other helpful tips about maintaining bright red hair, please share below!

Individual Lashes

Hey girls!

My first review is going to be about individual lashes. I had never had them done before as I always wear strip lashes but seeing as I was attending the Body and Soul festival, I decided to treat myself for the weekend. And let’s face it, who wants to try and apply strip lashes with glue etc. whilst sitting in a tent!

Just to specify, the individual lashes I had were not exactly “individual” per say, they are applied in clusters (as shown below) and are also better known as “weekender lashes”, although with care they can last longer. Actual individual lash extensions take approx. 1-2 hours to apply and are much more expensive, ranging from €50 - €70 euro.

So for my teeny budget, I shopped around and decided on a set for €25 in a beautiful little salon in Waterford called Beautilicious. Most salons in the Waterford area ranged from €20 - €25 but after some googling I decided that the Ardell lashes used in this salon were good quality lashes at a very reasonable price.

The owner Jennifer was so friendly and chatty, she really put me at ease throughout the treatment. Beforehand, I was asked whether I prefer length/volume/both so I chose both. The experience of having the eyelashes applied was pleasant; I just sat and closed my eyes while Jennifer worked her magic! It took approximately 20-30 minutes and the end result was great. Long, natural looking lashes and I felt pretty with no make-up on, always a bonus! There’s alot of maintenance with the lashes – so here’s a run down of the do’s and don’ts.

Do

ü Use an oil free cleanser to remove eye make-up but try not to rub the actual lashes, only the lid
ü Use care at all times with the lashes
ü Sleep on your back as to not bend/separate lashes

Don’t

X       Use any oil based products whatsoever on your eye area as this damages the bond in the eyelash glue
X       Use mascara on your lashes
X       Stretch the eye area when applying make-up as this loosens and separates lashes
X       Sleep face down as this will bend/separate lashes also
X       Pick/rub at your lashes as this may cause discomfort/swelling of the eyelid
X       Try and remove the lashes yourself, go back to the salon where they were applied for removal

As you can see, if you want your lashes to last you must be willing to put in the effort, they take quite some maintenance and dedication.
So to give you an idea of the lash difference, here’s is a picture of me on a normal make-up day with no false lashes, just mascara:
(Apologies the picture is not the best but it’s the only recent close-up I have!)

I have naturally long lashes but like most girls, I wanted them longer and fuller! Here are a couple of pictures of the finished result with no make-up and with make-up at Body and Soul:

These are the best pictures of the lashes, sorry girls! Body and Soul was too much fun to have time for selfies :P

Anyway, I didn’t wear eyeshadow throughout the festival. I used eyeliner everyday and I didn’t apply any mascara. As best I could, I didn't stretch my eyelid applying or removing the makeup.I used Garnier Micellar cleansing water (pictured below) to remove the eyeliner as it’s non oily and I think it’s the best option at a reasonable price.

My lashes lasted throughout the festival and only on Monday (I got them done the previous Thursday afternoon) did one section on one eyelid become loose. It wasn’t visible when I looked in the mirror but I could feel it had become slightly detached. This was probably due to the fact that I always sleep on my front with half my face in the pillow!

Once I arrived home, I began picking at them..bad idea! I got impatient so I tried to remove them as best I could with coconut oil. After a few attempts I removed them completely by gently rubbing the oil over the lashes and under them and leaving it soak in for a while. But sadly, because I hadn’t removed them properly I lost quite a lot of lashes and my eyelids were very swollen and irritated :(

Here are a few pictures of the damage I caused to my poor lashes, silly me!

Lesson learned to do what I'm told in future! So my end conclusion is, unfortunately, that I am not suited to individual lashes as I’m simply too impatient to have them removed properly or get a refill. They are beautiful on, very reasonable to get first time and also refilled (approx. €5) but if you want lashes with less maintenance and more lee-way I wouldn’t recommend individual lashes. However, on the other hand, if you want to look pretty and have eyelashes worth batting then give these a try. But as you can see above, if they do start to annoy you and you want them removed, go back to the salon and let a professional take them off for you! :)

I hope you enjoyed my first review girls! Feel free to leave a comment below with your own experience or tips :)
